Why study tea ceremony? There are as many reasons as there are students: to learn more about Japanese culture, to embrace a meditative approach to everyday life, to experience a new approach to serving and sharing tea. The goal is not simply to make tea for others, but to immerse yourself in another way of thinking, where you practice everything from subtle hand movements to preparing meals.
We teach tea ceremony in traditional Japanese style: In a small group setting where students work individually with a teacher to learn the basic movements and procedures needed to host a tea gathering or attend one as a guest. It typically takes about three months of weekly lessons to learn the most basic temae, or tea procedure, and after that a student can study as long and as deeply as he or she likes.
