This annual gathering celebrates the opening of the winter hearth (ro). We will have a formal laying of charcoal (sumi temae) followed by thick tea (koicha) and thin tea (usucha), with sweets. Please note that this is not a demonstration; some knowledge of tea ceremony etiquette is assumed. For those new to tea ceremony, we recommend one of our public demonstrations. Location: Shofuso. Requested donation: $25 for members, $30 for non-members. Please RSVP no later than October 31 using our Donate or Join page.

This celebration of the new year is also our biggest event of the year. We will have a formal laying of charcoal (sumi temae), followed by a meal featuring traditional new year's foods, koicha (thick tea) and then usucha (thin tea), with sweets. Please note that this is not a demonstration; some knowledge of tea ceremony etiquette is assumed. There will be two sittings: 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Requested donation is $60 for Urasenke Philadelphia members and $75 for non-members. Please RSVP no later than January 4 using our Donate or Join page.
