Hatsugama - New Year's Tea Gathering
Date: Sunday, January 12
Two sittings: 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
This celebration of the new year is also our biggest event. Each sitting will have a formal laying of charcoal (sumi temae), a full meal with traditional new year's foods, thick tea (koicha) and then thin tea (usucha), with sweets.
Please note that this is not a demonstration; some knowledge of tea ceremony etiquette is assumed. For those new to tea ceremony, we recommend one of our public demonstrations. Location: Shofuso. Requested donation: $60 for members of Urasenke Philadelphia and $75 for non-members. When paying, please include a note indicating whether this is for the 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. sitting and also note any food restrictions. Please register no later than January 4.
Urasenke Philadelphia is part of the Urasenke's international network of tea ceremony associations. By joining Urasenke Philadelphia, by extension you become a member of the Urasenke school. While this is of the greatest benefit for people who are actively studying tea ceremony, people with an interest in tea culture are also welcome to join! Members receive invitations to private events and educational opportunities.
